Today, Rep. Gloria Negrete McLeod (D-Chino) released the following statement in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the first class of AmeriCorps members:

"As we look back on the 20 years of dedicated service of AmeriCorps members, I commend all the work they have done to help fellow Americans. Citizen Service is an essential part of the solutions to many of the challenges our communities face. Over 900,000 individuals have served with the AmeriCorps program making it an indispensable resource for nonprofits, communities, and the individuals they serve. I applaud the work they have accomplished and wish this organization many more years of success."

AmeriCorps engages more than 75,000 Americans in intensive service each year at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based groups across the country. Since the program's founding in 1994, AmeriCorps members have contributed more than 1.2 billion hours in service across America while tackling pressing problems and mobilizing millions of volunteers for the organizations they serve.
